P residential Decree No. 626, as amended, provides that the Employees’ Compensation Program assist employees and their dependents in the event of work-connected disability or death. In the event of work-connected disability or death, employees and their dependents may promptly secure adequate income benefit, and medical or related benefits.
What is disability?
The law says:
Disability means loss or impairment of a physical or mental function resulting from injury or sickness. Injury refers to any harmful change in the human organism sustained at work carried out during working hours at the workplace or elsewhere while executing an order from the employer. On the other hand, sickness refers to any illness definitely accepted as an occupational disease listed by the Employees’ Compensation Commission, or any illness caused by employment subject to proof by the employee that the risk of contracting the same is increased by working conditions.
Once an employee is qualified to claim benefits under the Employees’ Compensation Program, he or she is entitled to compensation which means all payments for income benefits, and medical or related benefits.
Who shall be covered by the Employees’ Compensation Program?
The law says:
Under the Amended Rules on Employees’ Compensation, the following shall be covered:

Every employer;

Every employee who is not over sixty (60) years of age;

An employee over sixty (60) years of age shall be covered if he had been paying contributions to the Social Security System (SSS) or Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) prior to age sixty (60) and has not been compulsorily retired; and
-
An employee who is coverable by both SSS and GSIS shall be both covered by both Systems.
Please take note that in relation to the payment of compensation, medical certifications of physicians, and statement of accounts of hospitals, when duly authenticated are accepted as basis for payment.
