AT A GLANCE:
The last week of April of each year is declared as Rice Festival Week. (Proclamation No. 279, s. 1956)
In the heart of every Filipino lies a deep connection to rice, not just as a staple food but as a symbol of cultural identity and abundance. It is no wonder that the last week of April of each year is celebrated with great fervor as Rice Festival Week, a time to honor the golden grain that sustains our nation.
Enshrined in Proclamation No. 279, issued in 1956, Rice Festival Week is more than just a commemoration; it is a declaration of our commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in rice production. It is also a time to learn new and better ways to grow rice. Farmers, experts, and even regular folks come together to share ideas and processes to make sure we have lots of rice to go around.
The law says:
WHEREAS, the attainment of sufficiency in rice production is one of the major goals of our government; and
WHEREAS, to attain this objective as early as possible, it is necessary to draw the attention of our people to more effective methods of rice production;
Rice Festival Week speaks of our government’s earnest desire to attain sufficiency in rice production, recognizing it as a fundamental goal for our nation’s prosperity.
