According to a survey between July 2021 and June 2022, 38.6 percent of adults aged 20 and 59 in the Philippines were diagnosed as obese or overweight.


 

Obesity continues to be one of the country’s serious health problems due to the growing addiction to the Western type of lifestyle and diet which affects national socio-economic development. To address the different concerns in the prevention and treatment of obesity, management of obesity should be sought for to reduce life threatening diseases such as heart diseases and type 2 diabetes as well as to improve the quality of life. Hence, former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada declared the first week of September as obesity prevention awareness week to intensify the knowledge and awareness of the increasingly recognized risks of obesity. 

 

As defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), overweight and obesity are conditions involving “abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health.”
