AT A GLANCE:

The National Indigenous Peoples Day in the Philippines shall be observed on August 9 of each year and is hereby declared as a special working holiday.  (Republic Act No. 10689)

Indigenous Peoples are an imperative part of our country’s culture and nation-building. Their contribution to the preservation of the country’s heritage sets Filipinos apart from other nations. In view of this, there is a collective responsibility to advance and protect their well-being, especially their right to self-determination – to continue inclusivity where there is equal opportunity and treatment regardless of race and culture.

As such, the State recognizes as a policy the advancement of their collective well-being through the annual observance of National Indigenous Peoples Day in the Philippines. Every August 9, it is celebrated to promote public awareness for the recognition, identification, and protection of the rights of the members of the Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs). The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) spearheads the celebration by conducting various activities to give recognition to their rights, culture, and tradition. It is their mandate to protect and promote the interest and well-being of the ICCs/IPs with due regard to their beliefs, customs, traditions, and institutions. Annually, the NCIP highlights cultural knowledge and the corresponding rights for a better understanding of their tradition and way of life.

For this year, the theme is “Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-Determination”. Indigenous youths being culture-bearers and agents of change plays a significant role in maximizing the resources and technology to maintain the ICCs/IPs sustainable development. Further, empowering indigenous youths through development programs shall strengthen and safeguard their sustainable future.
