AT A GLANCE:
Every year, August 6 to August 12 is declared as National Hospital Week by virtue of Proclamation No. 181, series of 1993. This is celebrated to advocate awareness of health programs and recognize the important role of hospitals in promoting, safeguarding, and preserving the health of the people. (Proclamation No. 181, series of 1993)
National Hospital Week is formerly celebrated annually every May 6 to May 12 (based on Proclamation No. 308, series of 1952). However, Proclamation No. 181, series of 1993 supersedes it – changing the dates to August 6 until August 12 to give tribute to the birth date of Dr. Sixto Y. Orosa the one who pioneered the organization of what evolved as the present-day hospital system. It was also Dr. Orosa who drafted Act No. 3168 establishing provincial hospitals throughout the country which subsequently developed into a national hospital system.

Accordingly, the same reports indicate that there are a total number of 109,671 authorized bed capacity in the whole country.
National Hospital Week 2023
In commemoration of National Hospital Week, this year’s theme is “Sulong Kalusugan: Ospital Maaasahan.”. The healthcare industry in collaboration with other sectors in the community is expected to participate in the week-long celebration by preparing activities such as but not limited to seminars, lectures, culmination activities, and free medical services consistent with the event’s objective to maintain a healthy citizenry.
