In the Philippines, August is celebrated as National History Month, a period dedicated to reflecting on and understanding the rich and complex history of the archipelago. This observance, established by Presidential Proclamation No. 339 in 2012, serves as a reminder of the nation’s past and the pivotal events and figures that have shaped its identity. National History Month not only highlights historical milestones but also emphasizes the importance of historical awareness in fostering national pride and unity. The aforesaid law deemed that a week of celebration is not enough to undertake various activities given the richness and diversity of our nation’s history.
This 2024, the theme of the National History Month is “Salaysay ng Bayan, Saysay ng Bansa”.
In a statement posted by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines or NHCP on its social media platforms, the agency said that this year’s theme gives emphasis on local history as an important component in creating our national history.
“Kapag inilagay natin ang ating mga sarili sa konteksto ng ating mga pook na tinitirhan, pinag-aaralan, o pinagtatrabahuhan, lalo tayong napapalapit sa ating nakaraan at sa mga aral na nais nitong ituro sa atin”
National History Month in the Philippines serves as a vital period for reflection and education about the nation’s past. By commemorating significant events and figures, and by fostering a deeper understanding of history, Filipinos can strengthen their national identity and unity.
