AT A GLANCE:
The Philippine Sports Commission was established on January 24, 1990, by virtue of Republic Act No. 6847, also known as “The Philippine Sports Commission Act.”
Established in 1990, the Philippine Sports Commission has been consistent in promoting physical education, and encouraging and sustaining the development of sports in the country. This year, the Philippine Sports Commission (“PSC/Commission”) is celebrating 34 years of advocating sports in our country.
The commemoration of the PSC’s founding anniversary carries profound significance. It underscores the enduring commitment of the Commission to serve as the vanguard of sports development, ensuring the cultivation of talent, the facilitation of sporting events, and the unwavering support for our athletes.
Objectives of the Philippine Sports Commission
The objectives of the Philippine Sports Commission are:
(a) To provide the leadership, formulate the policies and set the priorities and direction of all national amateur sports promotion and development, particularly giving emphasis on grass-roots participation;
(b) To encourage wide participation of all sectors, government and private, in amateur sports promotion and development; and
(c) To supplement government appropriations for sports promotion and development. (Section 6, Republic Act No. 6847)
In the first set of objectives, think of the Commission as the engine driving the country’s sports. It is like the captain steering the ship of sports development. They are the ones making the rules and deciding what is important. When they talk about grassroots participation, they want everyone, not just the big shots, to be part of the sports journey. They want sports to be everywhere, not just a national thing, but something that happens in our neighborhoods. It is like building a strong sports foundation starting right from where we live, so everyone can join in.
Further, the Commission wants sports to be a big party where everyone is invited. It is not just the government’s job; they want companies, regular folks like you and me, and everyone to join in. The Commission wants sports for everyone, not just the pros getting paid. They want sports to be about having fun and being part of something, not just about money, and seeing sports as something that brings everyone together in the country.
With this, may the Philippine Sports Commission continue to be the beacon guiding our athletes to unparalleled heights, and may their unwavering commitment inspire a new era of sportsmanship, unity, and triumph. Here’s to the legacy of the PSC and the boundless potential that lies ahead for Philippine sports. Happy Founding Anniversary!
