EXPANDED JURISDICTION OF FIRST LEVEL COURTS

After reading, Expanded Jurisdiction of First Level Courts, read also  Restrictions on Advertising under Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003

  • Metropolitan Trial Courts (MeTC), Municipal Trial Courts in Cities (MTCC), Municipal Trial Courts (MTC), and Municipal Circuit Trial Courts (MCTC) are first level courts

  • Regional Trial Courts are second level courts

  • A new law was enacted expanding the jurisdiction of first level courts

R epublic Act No. 11576 entitled “AN ACT FURTHER EXPANDING THE JURISDICTION OF THE METROPOLITAN TRIAL COURTS, MUNICIPAL TRIAL COURTS IN CITIES, MUNICIPAL TRIAL COURTS, AND MUNICIPAL CIRCUIT TRIAL COURTS, AMENDING FOR THE PURPOSE BATAS PAMBANSA BLG. 129, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS “THE JUDICIARY REORGANIZATION ACT OF 1980,” AS AMENDED was signed into law on July 30, 2021 by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Republic Act No. 11576 (RA 11576) will take effect fifteen (15) days following its publication in the Official Gazette or in two (2) national newspapers of general circulations.

Please take note that first level courts refer to Metropolitan Trial Courts (MeTC), Municipal Trial Courts in Cities (MTCC), Municipal Trial Courts (MTC), and Municipal Circuit Trial Courts (MCTC) while second level courts refer to Regional Trial Courts.

With the approval of RA 11576, the jurisdiction of first level courts was expanded.
