AT A GLANCE:

Every last week of October every year is declared as Consumers’ Protection Week.

The law says:

“WHEREAS, the protection of the consuming public against unreasonable price increases or fraudulent practices should be the continuing concern of the government; and,

WHEREAS, there is a necessity to set aside a period during which concerted efforts for the assertion of consumers’ rights may be thoroughly discussed, planned and carried out.” (Proclamation No. 822, s. 1971)

The Consumer Protection Act highlights the significance of consumer education, acknowledging that well-informed consumers are better equipped to make prudent decisions regarding their purchases of products and services. Thus, the establishment of vital government agencies and entities dedicated to consumer protection which include the Department of Trade and Industry’s Consumer Protection Group (DTI-CPG) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), play pivotal roles in ensuring the safety and quality of consumables like food, drugs, and cosmetics.

In light of this commitment, the Department of Trade and Industry, through its Consumer Protection Group (DTI-CPG), has prepared a diverse range of activities for this year, aligning with the theme: “GenS: Generation Sustainable” to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 12, which focuses on promoting Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) which the DTI is committed to amplify its advocacy efforts in support of this cause.
