The Social Security System (SSS) is responsible for administering social security benefits for employees in the private sector. Social security serves as a safety net, offering financial support to workers in cases of death, disability, sickness, maternity, and old age.

Coverage in the Social Security System (SSS) shall be compulsory upon all sea-based overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) as defined under Republic Act No. 8042, or the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995, as amended by Republic Act No. 10022, provided that they are not over sixty (60) years of age. (Section 9-B, par. a, Republic Act No. 11199)

It is the policy of the State to establish, develop, promote, and perfect a sound and viable tax-exempt social security system suitable to the needs of the people throughout the Republic of the Philippines which shall promote social justice through savings, and ensure meaningful social security protection to members and their beneficiaries against the hazards of disability, sickness, maternity, old age, death, and other contingencies resulting in loss of income or financial burden. (Rule 2, Section 1, Implementing Rules and Regulations of R.A. 11199 or the Social Security Act of 2018)

The second week of September of every year is declared as “Education Week”. During this period, vital information about the objectives, work and accomplishments of public and private schools may be disseminated. (Proclamation No. 409, series of 1953)

The month of September is declared as the Philippine Social Security Month by virtue of Proclamation No. 682, series of 2004.

September 8 of every year is declared as National Literacy Day (Proclamation No. 1886, s. 1979)

Coverage with the SSS shall be compulsory upon all employees. (Section 9, R.A. No. 11199)
The compulsory coverage of an employer takes effect on the day of his employment. (Section 10, R.A. No. 11199)
The employer shall report all employees for coverage, regardless of status of employment, within thirty (30) days from actual employment date using the Employment Report Form (SS Form R-1A) for submission to any SSS branch, or online via the employer’s My.SSS account in the SSS website (www.sss.gov.ph).

An employer may terminate an employment for the commission of the crime or offense by the employee against the person of his employer or any immediate member of his family or his duly authorized representative and other causes analogous to the foregoing. (Article 297[282] of the Labor Code)

Every first week of September of every year is declared as the National Crime Prevention Week pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 461 dated August 31, 1994.
