AT A GLANCE:
The month of August of every year is declared as the “National Electrification Awareness Month” pursuant to Proclamation No. 1743, series of 2009.
It is a national policy of the Philippines to provide for total electrification. As such, the National Electrification Administration (NEA), together with 119 Electric Cooperatives (ECs) nationwide, playing major roles in setting up a conducive environment for socio-economic development, is tasked to purse the mandate of total electrification.
Proclamation No. 1743, series of 2009 issued by then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo aims to create public awareness through intensified information campaign showcasing electrification programs and projects. These projects provide the necessary stimulus packages for livelihood and business opportunities to flourish, thereby improving the quality of life of Filipinos in the rural areas.
The Proclamation provides:
“NOW THEREFORE, I, GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare August of every year as the “National Electrification Administration, and do hereby enjoin all government corporations, government agencies, private electric distribution utilities, including the electric cooperatives to participate actively in the observance of this event and to give full publicity and recognition to the vital significance of the electrification program in nation building.”
At present, he Department of Energy, through the National Electrification Administration is targeting total electrification in the Philippines in five years’ time and formulating a National Electrification Roadmap or NTER, which will serve as a comprehensive national strategic plan covering the various local total electrification roadmap and electricity distribution development plans.
