The Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009, or Republic Act 10028, requires all establishments, whether public or private, to provide support for breastfeeding in the workplace.


 

In a quiet corner of the bustling world, where the noise of life fades into a distant hum, there is a sacred and timeless ritual unfolding—a mother and her child, engaged in a tender dance of nourishment and love, a ritual called breastfeeding. 

 

Breastfeeding is a fundamental aspect of maternal and infant health, providing essential nutrients and emotional bonding opportunities. It is recognized by health organizations worldwide as the optimal method of infant feeding, offering numerous benefits for both mothers and their children. To raise awareness on the importance of and to further promote breastfeeding, R.A No. 10028 declared the month of August in each and every year throughout the Philippines shall be known as “Breastfeeding Awareness Month”, whereas the World Health Organization has dedicated the first week of August as World Breastfeeding Week. 

 

The theme for the 2024 commemoration is “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All,” urging both governments and the private sector to reevaluate and enhance policies and workplace arrangements that assist breastfeeding mothers. The Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009, or Republic Act 10028, requires all establishments, whether public or private, to provide support for breastfeeding in the workplace.

 

The Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act also offers incentives to government and private health institutions that implement rooming-in and breastfeeding practices. It states that “The State adopts rooming-in as a national policy to promote, safeguard, and support breastfeeding practices.”

 

The law emphasizes the advantages of breast milk, describing it as the “best food, as it provides essential nutrients perfectly suited to the infant’s needs.”
