AT A GLANCE:
Every third Sunday of January of every year is declared as the “Day of Sanctity and Protection of Human Life” (Proclamation No. 490, s. 2003)
Did you know that every third Sunday of January is designated as the “Day of Sanctity and Protection of Human Life” in the Philippines? On this day, people come together to celebrate and reflect on the sanctity and protection of human life.
Proclaimed through Proclamation No. 490 in 2003, this special day is dedicated to acknowledging and safeguarding the precious gift of human life. The law says:
WHEREAS, Section 5, Article II of the Philippine Constitution provides that: “The maintenance of peace and order, the protection of life, liberty, and property, and the promotion of the general welfare are essential for the enjoyment by all people of the blessings of democracy”;
WHEREAS, Section 12, Article II of the same Constitution provides that: “The State recognizes the sanctity of family life and shall protect and strengthen the family as a basic autonomous social institution. It shall equally protect the life of the mother and the life of the unborn from conception..”;
WHEREAS, the Filipino people strongly believes that human life is a gift from Almighty God, whose aid we implore in the Preamble of the Constitution; and
WHEREAS, the sanctity of human life has been and still is being seriously threatened and there is urgent need to remind us of this very important value of respect for human life;
In the heart of the Philippine Constitution lies a deep commitment to maintaining peace, protecting life, and promoting the general welfare for the benefit of all citizens. Further, this includes the recognition of the sanctity of both the mother’s life and the unborn child’s life, starting from conception.
However, despite the constitutional assurances, the sanctity of human life continues to face serious threats. It is against this backdrop that we find an urgent need to reaffirm and remind ourselves of the paramount value of respect for human life.
As we celebrate the “Day of Sanctity and Protection of Human Life,” let’s take a moment to appreciate the people around us, recognizing the value they bring to our communities. It’s an opportunity to show kindness, empathy, and understanding to one another, fostering a culture that respects and protects every life.
