AT A GLANCE:

The second week of April of every year is declared as the Livestock and Poultry Week in the Philippines, according to Proclamation No. 658, series of 1979.

Among the recognized industries in the country are the livestock and poultry production. Livestock and poultry have been the essential subsectors in the agriculture industry in the Philippines as both play an important part in the economic and socio-economic well-being in each household. They contribute to the livelihood, family income, soil fertility, food supply, and sustainable agricultural production.

In order to encourage the production of livestock and poultry as one of the basic industries of the country, Proclamation No. 640, series of 1960 has been issued declaring the third week of February of every year as Livestock and Poultry Week.

However, due to unfavorable weather conditions during the preparatory stages, Proclamation No. 658, series of 1970 was issued declaring the second week of April of every year as the Livestock and Poultry Week, instead of the third week of February of every year.

The law says:

“WHEREAS, the third week of February of every year has been designated as Livestock and Poultry Production Week under Proclamation No. 640 dated January 19, 1960; and

WHEREAS, unfavorable weather conditions during the preparatory stages as necessitate the transfer of the celebration to the 2nd week of April;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ALEJANDRO MELCHOR, Executive Secretary, by order of His Excellency, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, do hereby declare the second week of April of every year, instead of the third week of February as Livestock and Poultry Production Week.”
